Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl XVI Set for Dec. 22
LAS VEGAS - Last December when a record crowd of 44,615 boisterous fans witnessed the 15th annual Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl, it marked the event's second-consecutive sell-out and the largest crowd to ever watch a team sporting event in the state of Nevada. With Sam Boyd Stadium at 112 percent of capacity to see BYU defeat Oregon 38-8, the game ranked No. 1 among all 32 college postseason bowls for attendance by percentage.
The 16th installment of the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl will be no different?except that the game moves from Thursday to Saturday, Dec. 22, at 5 p.m. PST. The bowl?which was recertified by the NCAA in early 2007?has not been played on a Saturday since Utah downed Fresno State in 1999; the '98 and '97 games were also played on Saturdays.
The ESPN Regional Television (ERT) owned-and-operated event will once again be broadcast nationally on ESPN and ESPNHD. The game will pit the No. 1 pick from the Mountain West Conference versus the fourth- or fifth-place team from the Pacific-10 Conference.
"We've had tremendous success the last three years playing on Thursday, but we think the Saturday before Christmas is the perfect date for this year's game," says executive director Tina Kunzer-Murphy. "It gives fans the chance to enjoy Las Vegas on a weekend and then get home for the holidays in plenty of time."
