Las Vegas - Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl XVII will be played on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at Sam Boyd Stadium and begin at 5 p.m. PST, Executive Director Tina Kunzer-Murphy announced today.

The Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl, which is an ESPN Regional Television (ERT) owned-and-operated event, will once again be broadcast nationally on ESPN and ESPNHD and feature the No. 1 pick from the Mountain West Conference vs. the fourth-place team from the Pacific-10 Conference.

''Last year we thought moving to the Saturday before Christmas would be a good idea and instead found out it was a great idea after having such a successful bowl week,'' said Kunzer-Murphy. ''It gives fans the chance to enjoy the excitement of Las Vegas on a weekend and then get home for the holidays. A Saturday kickoff also means local fans have an easier time getting to the game.''
After a seven-year absence, the bowl returned to Saturday last December and enjoyed a sell-out crowd and robust television ratings. This season will mark the fifth time that the game will be held on a Saturday, joining 2007, 1999, 1998 and 1997.
Last year's BYU victory over UCLA in the 16th edition of the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl came before a crowd of 40,712, which marked the event's third consecutive sellout. The thrilling finish to the 17-16 final also helped produce a 22-percent jump in television ratings.
