More than 350 kids ages 8-14 were at Rebel Park on August 8 to take part in a clinic as part of NCAA Football's national youth initiative in partnership with the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.
The three-hour event was led by the UNLV football coaching staff, including second-year head coach Bobby Hauck, as well as dozens of returning Rebel players that were readying for their own practices to begin the next day.
The kids also got to go inside the Lied Athletic Complex and hear from special guest speaker Mike Pritchard. The Las Vegas native was a college football star at Colorado and then in the NFL and currently is the radio anyalyst for the Rebels.
"This event has been a huge hit in Las Vegas, which is why for the third straight summer NCAA Football has chosen the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas to organize one of its clinics.'' said Tina Kunzer-Murphy, executive director of the bowl. ''We especially like it because the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, NCAA Football and UNLV have a chance to team up in showing what a great game football is to Southern Nevada kids who are not financially in a position to normally attend sports camps."
NCAA Football's Youth Initiative is a $1.5 million, three-year investment that began in New Orleans in 2007. Through this program, NCAA Football strives to attract more youth participants to the game, provide them with additional motivation to pursue higher education opportunities, help them develop the necessary skills to be successful on and off the field, and help to establish a new base of lifelong NCAA Football fans.
Tickets for the 2011 MAACO Bowl Las Vegas are on sale now. Prices are $25, $35, $55 and $100 and can be reserved by phone at by calling (702) 732-FANS. Last year's MAACO Bowl Las Vegas attracted the sixth consecutive sellout crowd as 41,923 fans saw No. 10 Boise State defeat No. 19 Utah 26-3.
