Over 12,000 Volunteers to
Contribute to America's Bowls
This year, an estimated 12,000 volunteers from 28 different communities will serve at America's 35 bowl games. Each bowl will host an average of 449 volunteers in their community. Pledging days and hours of their time, individuals from across the country will contribute to the experiences of over 7,000 student-athletes who compete in bowls as well as the experience of more than a million fans who attend bowls. While the duties fulfilled by volunteers are different at every bowl, individuals assume roles leading bowl parades, transporting student-athletes from practices and events, and producing game scripts which time the entire game from the coin-toss to the trophy presentation.
"Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our 'bowl families,'" said Tina Kunzer-Murphy, Chairman of the Football Bowl Association. "I couldn't be more proud to see so many men and women come together in their communities and pledge their time during the holiday season. The desire of people to help at the bowls is a reminder of the special place bowls have in the college football experience."
Volunteer Experiences In Their Own Words:
Debbie Nash, 27 Years of Service, Chick-fil-A Bowl
"Chick-fil-A Bowl Week is one of the highlights of my year. I consider them part of my family. And when I say 'family,' I mean it literally. I got my husband, Frank, involved with the Bowl as we began dating and we ended up getting married. Together, our entire family of volunteers makes it our mission to provide a Bowl Week experience second to none. We want our teams to live well, laugh often and even learn about life while they're here."
Chris Harwell, 4 Years of Service, Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl
"Volunteering for the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl has truly been one of the most rewarding things I do. Being a part of an annual event that means so much to the vitality of our community makes me proud to be associated with postseason college football and Nashville's Bowl game."
Cathy Luetje, 20 Years of Service, AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic
"The volunteer team at the AT&T Cotton Bowl is more like a family. We have such a tremendous group that takes a week of vacation to help make the Classic bigger and better each year. We have volunteers that have been helping for over 50 years. That shows you the level of commitment the Cotton Bowl staff and volunteers have to create the best experience for our teams, media and fans alike."
Jackie Young, 20 Years of Service, Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl/San Diego Co. Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl
"I get so much out of volunteering for San Diego's two bowl games. It's a passion I share with hundreds of other civic-minded San Diegans. We all take great pride in that our year-around efforts make certain that San Diego's tourism industry is alive and bustling in late December."
